The Great British Baking Show is the show that you didn’t even realize that you needed in your life. Normally I am not one to dabble in cooking shows but GBBS caught my eye after I had just completed Netflix’s The Sinner. I was in search of some lighter television after diving deep into the sinister secrets found within The Sinner. The night was no longer young yet I found myself yearning for another show to sooth the Sunday scaries that were focused on the work week ahead. I originally found myself questioning my plans as Netflix barraged me with tailored suggestions of television that I could consume. In one way or another I found myself hovering over The Great British Baking Show and I was immediately intrigued by the personality of the show. The relaxed nature oozed from the seems of the screen yet you always found yourself engaged with the intense competition at hand.

The careful consideration that went into the editing, producing, and casting of GBBS is the subtle star of the series. Each season is packed with a unique group of individuals who each bring their own charisma to the show. They create an environment in which the competition can thrive even while the audience remains entertained. You will witness bakers assisting other bakers throughout the competition out of the kindness of their own hearts. Everything about the show is absolutely pleasant and will undoubtedly put you in a good mood. Every shot of the series is carefully edited with a level of attention to detail that is refreshing to see in television defined as “Competition Reality TV.” The short snippets introducing each baker and their baked goods almost feels as though you are being introduced into a fairy-tale with glorious images providing the audience with a glimpse into what the baked goods may look like after completion.

The show’s mainstays always anchored every season, providing a delightful performance throughout every challenge while miraculously finding a way to keep the audience involved by meticulously evaluating the baked goods. Everyone’s enthusiasm for the competition and the joy of baking continues to carry the show through its many seasons. Whether it is Paul giving out one of his famous handshakes or Prue suddenly bursting with excitement after eating a bite, there is always an element of their evaluation that will ensure the upbeat feeling of the show.
The judge’s constructive feedback is always presented in a way even the worst baker can understand. As a novice baker myself, I’ve never found myself out of my comfort zone with GBBS. The comments add value and personality to each individual baker while maintaining the competition’s integrity.
You will find yourself observing an endless number of goodies while consuming The Great British Baking Show’s seven seasons yet you will never grow bored of the baked goods featured in the competition because GBBS does an excellent job of maintaining a strong variety of baked goods for each challenge.
